Steamer & drifter
A steamer is a selection whose price is shortening (backed in). A drifter is one whose price is lengthening (drifting out). They are the two directions of market movement.
As money and information arrive, a selection's price moves. A steamer shortens as it is backed. A drifter lengthens as support falls away. Tracking these moves, especially near the off, is a common signal for value and trading products.
Steamers and drifters only become visible when prices are sampled consistently through to the start, so a regular polling cadence matters more here than raw breadth.
