How it works
When a bookmaker pays an extra place (the first four instead of the first three, say), back each-way there and lay the win and place markets at the exchange. Most finishes cost a small qualifying loss. If the horse finishes exactly in the extra place, the bookmaker's place part and your place lay both win.
Worked through
£5 each way at 11.0 with 1/5 place terms, on a race where the bookmaker pays one place more than the exchange's place market. Win lay 11.5, place lay 3.4, with 2% commission on each.
| It shows | Value |
|---|---|
| Win lay stake | £4.79 |
| Place lay stake | £4.44 |
| Qualifying loss | -£0.96 |
| Extra place profit | £14.04 |
A win, a place the exchange also pays on, or no place: each finishes on -£0.96. A finish in the extra place itself comes to £14.04, and only that finish.
Questions
Why lay both a win and a place market?
An each-way bet is two bets, one on the win and one on the place, so it is covered by laying both the exchange win market and the exchange place market. The calculator sizes each lay separately.
Which place market goes in?
The exchange's place market for the same race. It settles on fewer places than the bookmaker pays on an extra place race, and that gap is the extra place.
