How it works

Pick the bet and enter the stake for each bet in it. For every selection, type its price as a fraction such as 5/1 or a decimal such as 6.0, and say how it finished. Each way splits every bet into a win part and a place part at the same stake, the place part paid at the terms you choose. A non-runner passes its stake on unchanged, so a double with one settles as a single.

Every bet it settles

Bets by the number of selections they take, and how many bets each makes win only and each way.

Worked through

A £10 double at 4/1 and 6/4: 1 bet, £10.00 in all. The 4/1 won and the 6/4 was a non-runner. The 4/1 carried a 15p Rule 4 deduction.

With the second selection out, the double settles as a single on the first. The Rule 4 deduction comes off its winnings, so the £10.00 stake returns £44.00.

Questions

  • Does it include bookmaker bonuses?

No. Lucky 15 bonuses, consolation payouts and boosted prices are each bookmaker's own offer, with its own terms. The calculator settles the bet itself, at the prices and results you enter.

  • How is a Rule 4 deduction applied?

Enter the deduction in pence in the pound against the selection it applies to. It comes off that selection's winnings only, never its stake, on the win part and the place part alike.

  • How does a dead heat change the return?

The stake on that selection is divided by the number of runners in the dead heat, and the full price is paid on what is left. A dead heat for the win still pays the place part in full. Three runners tied for the last two places paid share two places, so two thirds of the place stake is paid.

  • Which place terms should I enter?

The terms your bookmaker settles on. On course, a race that loses runners is settled on the runners that started, and some online bookmakers keep the terms from the time of the bet. A race with no place terms is all to win: the place stake goes on to win.

  • Is a non-runner always void?

On a bet struck on the day, yes. An ordinary ante-post bet on a horse that does not run is a loser, so set it to Lost, unless the bookmaker offered non-runner no bet.
